Barbara Becker founded EqualShot in 2002 to help non-profit organizations and foundations deliver their critical messages with maximum impact.
Barbara's twenty-year communications career has spanned a broad range of organizations including the United Nations, Human Rights First, the Center for Reproductive Rights, and the Grameen Bank of Bangladesh. She has worked in Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America on human rights, education, environment, microfinance and women's health issues.
She has written numerous op-eds and columns for non-profit leaders and has used her expertise in media relations to achieve placements in outlets such as CNN, the New York Times, NPR, and the Associated Press. She has developed a strategic communications training program for non-profit staff members and spokespeople designed to build organizational capacity.
Barbara is an award-winning producer of the documentary Silence and Complicity, which was instrumental in achieving fair treatment for women patients in the Peruvian public health care system. She has also worked closely with the musician Peter Gabriel to provide video equipment and training to human rights advocates throughout the world, and with Pulitzer Prize-winning author Frank McCourt on a video about hunger and malnutrition.
For several years, Barbara has served as a senior adviser to StoryCorps, the Peabody Award winning nationwide project to gather oral histories that will be archived at the Library of Congress. StoryCorps provides the 14 million listeners of NPR's "Morning Edition" with a stream of moving first-person accounts by Americans ranging from Civil Rights veterans to Hurricane Katrina survivors to Alzheimer's victims.
Barbara is a part-time faculty member at Columbia University's masters program in strategic communications and taught for several years in the department of media studies and film at the New School University. She has also delivered addresses at many conferences and before numerous public interest groups, including Harvard Law School’s Human Rights Program, the Association of Women in International Development, the Association of Fundraising Professionals, and the MicroCredit Summit.
Barbara holds a Master of Arts in International Administration from the School for International Training, a Master of Arts in Media Studies from the New School, and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Anthropology from Haverford College.
